Babberich House originally belonged to Germany and in the 14th century the estate was the setting for a power struggle between Kleve and Gelre in Germany. At that time, the Liemers region was a patchwork of pieces of land that belonged to Cleves. The lords did their utmost to gain possession of new territory through smart marriages, strife and inheritance. Count Johan II of Cleves was married to Mechteld, the sister of Duke Reinald of Guelders. Only a few years after the formation of our kingdom in 1813, government over this area was transferred from Germany and Dutch rule over this region was established. Babberich thus also became part of the Dutch Kingdom. Halsaf Castle is mentioned in the books from about 1363, when it was still a castle complete with towers and a drawbridge. Unfortunately, the castle was destroyed by fire in the 18th century and the current country house was built. The De Nerée tot Babberich family has owned this since 1785. This family has rebuilt it to the state it is in today. The estate was built on the foundation of the castle, which is why it is also called Halsaf castle. From 2015, the rooms in the estate have been restored to their original state, such as the sitting room and the crockery room.
